Department of English

The Department of English in a miniature form has been a part and parcel of the college since its very inception on the 5 th of August , in the year 1968. The college was then popular among the people as Motijheel College of Commerce and learners from near and far came to pursue their undergraduate couse in Commerce in the evening shift. As time passed the college began to run in the day shift and then in the year 2006 was transformed into a multi-faculty institution and renamed as Dum Dum Motijheel Rabindra Mahavidyalaya. With the expansion of the college, the department of English started spreading its wings and in the year 2009 from an Elective subject in the B.A General Degree course , the English Honours Department, affiliated to Calcutta University was opened with the unflinching support of the then Principal, Lt. Dr. Sandip Dasgupta, the teaching and non teaching faculty of the institution and all the stake holders of the institution. Today ,after a span of almost 14 years , a full fledged department with an intake capacity of 55 students per academic session adorns the college.There are four highly qualified , dedicated teachers in the department who untiringly help the students inside as well as outside the classroom . The students of the department usually get good placements after they complete their academic qualification. Many of our students pursue higher studies and some get into the professional field after completion of their graduation. The department has a departmental library, besides the central library of the college which enables the students to get books of their need whenever they require. The regular interactive sessions, Departmental seminars and exhibitions inspire the students to participate with interest as they can showcase their latent talents. This, in turn, motivate them to work in groups and enhance their communication skills----which is the need of the day. In the CBCS framework (since 2018) students outside the Honours realm who take up English as a course of study and fare very well. The Department is now a blooming one and is taking good shape. It is the dynamic nature of The Principal of the college, the teachers, non teaching staff members, all stake holders especially the enthusiastic students that have led to the continual expansion of the department in its quantity and quality. Our students and teachers work hand in hand to make this onward journey possible.
